DECLARE A HUMANITARIAN CEASEFIRE IN ZAMBOANGA CITY, NOW!

A Petition Campaign in Support for Dialogue,

Humanitarian Action and Ceasefire

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED PEACE ADVOCATES, CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS AND CONCERNED CITIZENS, SERIOUSLY APPEAL IN CALLING FOR DIALOGUE and THE IMMEDIATE DECLARATION OF HUMANITARIAN CEASEFIRE in the conflict-affected barangays in Zamboanga City to address the standoff since September 9, 2013.

Specifically, we urge H.E. Benigno Simeon Aquino III, MNLF Chair Nur Misuari, Mayor Isabelle Climaco, Sec Teresita Deles, and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) to heed the following calls :

1.   We call for an immediate stop to the firefight and a prompt and orderly redeployment of forces – both the MNLF and the AFP to address the alarming evacuee situation;

2.  We call on both parties to immediately delineate a humanitarian corridor where civilians and injured combatants may be safely assisted with their humanitarian needs;

3.  Generate public support towards broad humanitarian action by allowing full access and the entry of humanitarian groups to complement existing efforts of the local government, DSWD, and civil society in Zamboanga City;

4.  We call for both parties to dialogue and allow for sufficient space for peaceful negotiations to take place;

5.  We strongly recommend that those who are responsible for the deaths, destruction of properties and other human rights violations will be held fully accountable;

6.  We appeal to the Philippine Government and its Office on the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) to translate its policy in addressing the fate of the MNLF peace process and their legitimate issues;

7.  Lastly, we call for the intervention of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) in resolving this issue, sustaining the role they have long-fulfilled in ensuring the hopes for peace in Mindanao.

We hope and pray that this matter is resolved quickly, justly and peaceably, and that equanimity prevails in the restoration of peace and order in Zamboanga City and its surrounds.

Declare a Zamboanga City-wide ceasefire now! Spare the civilians from armed hostilities! No to armed action and militarization in Zamboanga City!

Greeting from the Left Party of Sweden (Vänsterpartiet) to the

National Congress of PLM

Fellow Comrades,

On behalf of the Left Party of Sweden I would like to extend my heartfelt greeting to the National Congress of Partido Lakas ng Masa!

The collapse of the global capitalist economic system presents new opportunities and challenges for the socialist parties. The left wing parties around the World know that capitalism is intrinsically unable to provide a sustainable future for our planet. We also know that it is neo-liberal policies that have caused the grave problems that we are now facing.

Comrades, the challenge for us now lies in formulating viable and realistic alternatives to capitalism. That, however, is not enough. We must also find ways of communicating our message to the public and thereby also increasing the strength behind the calls for change.

The answer from the financial and political elite to the crisis has been as clear as it has been ruthless: it is the low-wage workers, retirees and unemployed who will be hit hardest. The ones that have done the least to cause the crisis are the ones who should pay the most.

Faced with this, the answer from the united socialist parties of the World must be equally clear: we will not stand for this! We demand justice and a new economic order. The answers
to the crisis within the economy and the climate lie in the politics of socialism! The Left Party of Sweden and PLM stand united in reaching that goal.

With our warmest regards and hopes of a fruitful Congress!

Mr. Mussie Ephrem
Member of the Central Committee
Left Party of Sweden

PLM message to 13th Annual Congress of PSM PDF Print E-mail
Written by Partido Lakas ng Masa

To:  Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM)

Warm solidarity greetings from the Philippines.  We congratulate the Parti Sosialis Malaysia in its 13th Annual Congress and we wish you the best in all your endeavors. It has been a long time since we decided to establish fraternal relation with your Party and our solidarity and cooperation have been strengthening all through the years.

In this Congress, we send one of our leaders, Ka Romy Castillo, to be with you and to personally greet you all on behalf of the Partido Lakas ng Masa (PLM) in the Philippines. His visit is part of our continuing exchange of party leaders and activists which started in 2009.

Our two parties, the PSM and the PLM, have assisted each other not only to ensure the strengthening of the socialist movements in our respective countries, but to contribute in the renewal and development of the socialist movements in our region and throughout the world.

We are very proud to have established a network of socialist parties and groups in the Southeast Asia region that included socialist comrades in Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Australia. We know we still have to widen our network to include socialists not only from Southeast Asia but in the entire Asian and Pacific region as well.  It is heartening to know that both our parties are also initiating various solidarity projects with socialist groups and parties in other Asian countries through separate or combined initiatives.

We live in very troubled but interesting times. The global capitalist economic crisis continues without let up in every corner of the world; the environment crisis is threatening the very survival of our planet; and the political crisis is engulfing not only a few countries, but entire regions of the world today. There are inspiring signs however.

The revival of socialist struggles and socialist movements are making tremendous strides in Latin America today. Socialist leaders in government such as Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, Evo Morales of Bolivia, and Rafael Correa of Ecuador, have been leading the struggles for what is now known as Socialism in the 21st century.  Chavez has called for the formation of the Fifth International to gather the strength of the socialist movements worldwide. The process has temporarily been stalled but the formation of a revolutionary socialist network in Latin America is still underway.  Precisely because of the socialist upsurges in the region, the imperialist bulwark that is the United States has imposed severe economic sanctions against Venezuela’s state oil companies to curtail the government’s social aid programmes in Venezuela and other countries, including Iran.

The Middle East and North Africa are now the hotbed of growing resistance against dictatorial and neo-liberal rule.  People’s mobilizations and popular resistance are gaining grounds and are able to depose autocrats’ rule in Tunisia and Egypt.  The struggles in Yemen, Syria, Bahrain, Iran, and other countries in the region are still continuing and unfolding. The unemployed youth and new radicalizing Arab forces are the ones leading the struggles. Meanwhile, the imperialist forces are using NATO to bomb Libya, in the guise of supporting the anti-Ghaddafi rebel forces, but in fact, the military attack is designed to protect imperialist interests in Libya and in the oil-rich region.

As to whether the uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa will become a part of the renewing socialist movement will depend on the capability of the revolutionary and politically conscious forces in the region to oppose the imperialist intervention while leading the anti-dictatorial uprisings in the region.

While Europe and North America constitute the imperial bastions of imperialist forces oppressing and dominating the world, the working class and the socialist forces are trying to regroup and strengthen the anti-capitalist forces in these regions.  There have been massive protests and demonstrations against the austerity measures imposed by the international financial institutions and so-called multilateral banks in France, Greece, Portugal, Ireland, UK, and even in a number of states in the United States. The massive mobilization of the youth in Spain was inspired by the conflagration in North Africa, and is still continuing and growing.

There is a regroupment going on among socialist and anti-capitalist groups in Europe.  The PLM is fortunate to have visited Germany recently and to meet with the socialist party of Die Linke.  It is important to know that the socialist movement in the former heartland of “really-existing socialism” has been doing a lot of rethinking to renew socialism around a democratic and egalitarian platform. The rethinking and regroupment project also cover former socialist parties and groups which have been part of the leading revolutionary forces in the region for a long while.

Lastly, we again congratulate the PSM for being very central in renewing and developing the socialist movement in our region.  We are proud to be in close solidarity with your party during these interesting times. The socialist movements have suffered tremendous blows, but the wind seems to be blowing again in the direction of another socialist resurgence.

Advance Socialism in the 21st Century!

Long-live the Parti Sosialis Malaysia!

In solidarity,

Partido Lakas ng Masa (Party of the Labouring Masses – Philippines)

PLM Solidarity Statement with the French Resistance

Partido Lakas ng Masa congratulates the French workers and people who are staging crippling strikes, setting up barricades and holding widespread marches against recent austerity measures being planned by the French government. The resistance of the striking oil-workers, truckers, bus drivers, railwaymen, teachers, postmen, printers and dockers was joined by students and schoolchildren all over France. The protests, which started in May, is still going on and has already mobilized millions of people in Paris and various parts of the country. Twice on October 12 and October 19, more than 3.5 million people joined the general strike and took to the streets in protest.

Patido Lakas ng Masa commends the blockade tactics being employed by the French unions and workers to paralyze oil refineries and bring the economy to a standstill.  The paralysis is clearly aimed at defeating the plot of the Sarkozy government to implement the infamous “pension reform” which will dramatically reduce the rights of workers to access pension. The reform is on top of recent laws that increase the retirement age from 60 to 62 years of age and increase the period of time workers must work to receive a full pension.

The whole Europe is now in turmoil as capitalist governments resort to further austerity cuts that will dismantle remaining social welfare benefits.  Massive austerity cuts which affect pensions and jobs of workers have been imposed in Greece and Portugal just a few months ago. France is now starting to implement it. Yesterday, the British government declared they are doing the same to save the banks and the big transnational firms from collapsing.

Through strikes, barricades, blockades, and marches – the French workers and people have shown the way how to resist the capitalist governments’ scheme to take apart the remaining welfare benefits in Europe.  We are confident that the working class masses everywhere will take their cue from the French resistance.

Partido Lakas ng Masa Philippines congratulates Links magazine

We congratulate Links International Journal for Socialist Renewal, and note that since going on-line the journal has become more accessible to us here in the Philippines. It's an invaluable resource for socialist analysis, discussion and debate.

We also appreciate the inclusiveness of the magazine, as it carries articles from socialists and the socialist movement from a variety of perspectives. Keep up the excellent work.

****************************

October 20, 2010 -- In the early hours of October 20, 2010, Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal passed an historic milestone -- its 1,000,000th visitor (since statistics began being kept on April 4, 2008). The unknown visitor entered site at Renfrey Clarke's essential article, "The new climate-change denialism: Who promotes it, and how to answer it".

Those 1 million visitors have collectively read more than 1.33 million articles since April 2008.

Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal's mission has been to promote the revival of a democratic, ecological, thinking, activist socialism, and to encourage and publicise the activities and views of active socialists around the world who are rebuilding the socialist and radical alternative in deed as well as word.

Links' success is especially gratifying because there were some who claimed -- when we took the decision to go solely online, rather than continue to produce the excellent but largely unread hard-copy version -- that Links was being "closed down" and was part of an abandonment of our fundamental socialist principles. Well, there are now more than a million arguments against that pessimistic forecast.

Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal would like to thank all its readers, contributors, collaborators and well wishers for their assistance in passing this important milestone, in particular the comrades of the Socialist Alliance and Green Left Weekly in Australia, without whom Links could not appear. We'd like give special mention to our comrades in Socialist Voice in Canada, the Socialist Party of Malaysia, the Labour Party Pakistan, the Partido Lakas ng Masa in the Philippines, the People's Democratic Party (Indonesia) and Working People's Association (Indonesia), Patrick Bond from South Africa, and many other left parties, workers' groups, liberation movements and individual activists who have made Links an important asset for the entire world socialist movement.

Don't YOU miss an article, subscribe at http://www.feedblitz.com/f/?Sub=343373 or follow Links at http://twitter.com/LinksSocialism. You can also join the Links Facebook group.
