Oppose war threat in the Korean Peninsula!
President Duterte, promote all diplomatic efforts in ASEAN against Trump's war plans!

The threat of a nuclear war in the Korean Peninsula is a real and present danger. Not since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, when the US threatened Cuba for seeking protection from the Soviet Union against another US attempt to overthrow its government after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, has there been so much concern about the possibility of a nuclear war.

Despite the portrayal of his administration as being isolationist, from Syria to Afghanistan and now against North Korea, Donald Trump's war plans to promote US global interests, are deadly serious.

The US threats against North Korea have come about because the North Korean state is trying to develop nuclear weapons. North Korea left the international non-proliferation treaty in 2003 and since 2006 has been subjected to US-supervised sanctions.

The US, which is also the biggest proliferator of nuclear weapons, has refused to sign this treaty. Other countries with nuclear weapons, such as Israel, India, Pakistan, China and Iran have all refused to ratify the treaty.

The border between North and South Korea is the most militarized border in the world. U.S. military power is overwhelming, but North Korea does possess some deterrents. Both sides possess nuclear weapons. If war broke out there would be high casualties on both sides.

The last war on the Korean peninsula, from 1950 to 1953, resulted in well over 2 million civilian casualties.

At various times in the past 20 years, the Pentagon has estimated that 1 million Korean civilians, divided evenly between North and South, would die in the first days of an all-out war. More than 25 million people live in metropolitan Seoul, South Korea's capital. The Pentagon refers to the area as the "kill box."

While China has been an ally of North Korea, it's unclear whether China will intervene militarily in North Korea's defense. Donald Trump's war cries against North Korea is also aimed as a warning against China.

The plans for war are very much part of the US "pivot to Asia" strategy which has resulted in an unprecedented rise of militarization in the region.

We have to oppose Donald Trump's drive to war in the region -- for the sake of the Korean people, for the unity and self-determination of the Korean people and ultimately, for the sake of humanity and our environment.

We demand that President Duterte act on his statements to distance the Philippines from the US foreign policy, that is Donald Trump's war plans. This means all joint military exercises with the US must stop. All military treaties, such as the VFA and EDCA must be terminated. The Duterte government must make known its opposition to US war plans in the Korean Peninsula and take every possible diplomatic initiative to prevent a war.

The Philippines is the Chair of ASEAN and can use this position to garner support against a war in the Korean Peninsula, to promote a political resolution towards a unified Korea and hereby demonstrate its commitment to a genuinely sovereign and independent foreign policy. #

We, the undersigned organizations, express our support and solidarity with the people of Venezuela and Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, against the ongoing threats of counterrevolution and violent attacks orchestrated by right-wing forces with the backing of the United States.

The right-wing opposition forces in Venezuela have been aggressively campaigning and stirring up the sentiment to remove President Maduro. The right-wing forces are exploiting the institutional conflict between the Supreme Court of Justice and the opposition-controlled National Assembly to fuel tension, escalate political violence and destabilize the country in order to clear the path for imperialist intervention and enable them to take power again, similar to what happened in the coup of April 2012, 15 years ago.

The Organization of American States (OAS) has backed the right-wing forces in Venezuela by threatening to invoke the so-called Democratic Charter against Venezuela. Meanwhile, Admiral Kurt W. Tidd, the commander of the United States Southern Command, also warned of response to Venezuela’s “instability”, which signals the pretext for US intervention in Venezuela to aid the right-wing forces. Such a move by imperialist forces in threatening the sovereignty of Venezuela and principles of self-determination is alarming.

The consequences of foreign intervention and a right-wing takeover of power through violent means will be devastating for the people of Venezuela. All the social gains of the Bolivarian revolution for the past 18 years would be destroyed. The right-wing forces which represent the interests of oligarchy will destroy the social missions, return nationalized companies and landed estates to their filthy rich owners, massively cut old age pensions and slash health care and education. The defeat of the  Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela will be a setback for progressive forces and will have wider implications for Latin America.

We therefore:

-       Reiterate our support for and solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela.

-       Reject any form of US or foreign intervention which seeks to undermine the independence and sovereignty of Venezuela.

-       Call upon the progressive forces around the world to rally around to support the people of  Venezuela in defending the Bolivarian Revolution.

This joint statement is endorsed by the following organizations;

1. Philippines Venezuela Solidarity Network -- Phil-Ven-Sol

2. Philippines-Cuba Cultural and Friendship Association (PhilCuba)

3. Campaign for a Life of Dignity (KAMP)

A new party is born. A party for our times.

A party of Change! A party of Socialism!

“Pare-pareho lamang silang trapo!
Mangungurakot na naman yan!
Bobolahin na naman nila tayo!”

Sounds really familiar. We have heard this expression from people of all walks of life time and again. An automatic response, when one is asked about a certain politician or politicians in general.

For decades, generations of politicians from the same clan and some new ones have been deceiving the masses. Every election for them has been an opportunity to make more promises. And after every election, all these remain just that – promises.
