January 18, 2015 -- PLM marched at España Street to attend the mass of Pope Francis at Luneta, parading streamers that highlight the progressive statements made by Pope Francis on the issues of globalization and the capitalist economy, labor rights, against trafficking of women and children, for the environment and ecological justice, youth rights, against war and the systemic causes of inequality and poverty (see photos). While celebrating and affirming the progressive statements of Pope Francis, the PLM also affirms its unequivocal commitment and continued pursuance of the struggle for gender equality, a woman’s right to choose to control her own body and reproductive functions, and against all forms of discrimination that marginalize the LGBT people.

The parade of streamers was stopped by the police at corner Blumentritt St. upon orders by the security team headed by DILG Secretary Mar Roxas. Cause-oriented groups carrying streamers, placards and other ‘propaganda materials’ are not allowed to come close near the site of the mass, even if the materials are mere reaffirmation of the progressive calls made by the Pope himself. Someone commented, we have a Pope who is close to the poor, but on order of those from above (not from heaven of course), the poor should stay nowhere close to the Pope.
