[This is the statement released by the Young PLM during the May 1 rally.]

It is the dream of every young people to finish their education so they can serve their parents

and families, and also to serve the needs of the nation.

But the truth is that the number of out-of-school youth have been increasing annually.

In 2011, around 6.25 million young people or 16% of 39 million under the age of 6-24 years

old were reported as out-of-school youth. This figure is higher than the 4.8 million (14.7%)

out-of-school youth in 2002.

This is a brief summary on the situation of education in the country: For every 100 school-age

kids, 90 will enroll in Grade 1; 40 will graduate in high school; 21 will go to college; 12 will

graduate in college; and out of the graduates, only one will be employed.

This means that for those of us still in high school, around half will reach college, and only half

of this number will graduate. And for every 100 graduates, only one will be employed in the country!

This is the woeful situation of the youth today.

Despite this, our politicians, the trapos, bleed the country dry by stealing from government coffers.

The funds which should go for education of the youth are primarily siphoned off to their pockets.

This year is going to be worse. The trapos who use their ‘scholarship funds’ for political patronage

have cut off the fundings. With the government doing nothing, many more students will drop out of

school come opening.

This education crisis should stop.

We now demand from government to provide free college education for public schools.

The government can use funds that it should recover from corrupt agencies and thieves

in government.

And if this is not enough, the government can slap more taxes from the rich, especially the 40

multi-billionaire families in the government.

This is the only solution to solve the education crisis and to prevent further wastage of intellect

and talent of young people.

Join us in our campaign for free college education. Education is a human right, not a privilege.

It is not something that should be seen as a ‘debt of gratitude’ (utang na loob) to the trapos.

By fighting for our education, we can truly claim Gat Jose Rizal’s assertion that the youth are the

real hope our nation.#
