RESOLUTION AGAINST THE KILLINGS OF LUMADS AND SUPPORT TO THEIR STRUGGLES FOR LAND, JUSTICE AND AGAINST LARGE-SCALE MINING OPERATIONS

The Manila Socialism Conference condemns the killings, arrests, harassment, zoning, and vilification of the Lumad people, an indigenous group, in southern Philippines. The direct attacks against the Lumad are instigated by the Philippine military and paramilitary groups connected with the mining operations and corporate land claims in their areas.

This early month of November, hundreds of Lumads trekked from Mindanao to Manila and encamped at the Liwasang Bonifacio to protest the tribal ethnocide. As per reports, more than 6,000 Lumads have also fled to evacuation centers in Mindanao this year following the murders of Lumad leaders and community members and the military occupation of their communities and schools.

Before the recent killings, there had been a recorded 73 indigenous people murdered under the present administration, 58 of them Lumads. The killings never stop.

Recently, the attacks have been against those administering schools that cater to children and old people in Lumad areas. The administrators of award-winnng Alternative Learning Center for Agricultural and Livelihood Development (Alcadev) have been killed or hounded. And a few days ago, the teachers’ cottage on an Alcadev branch in Agusan del Sur was torched by still unidentified arsonists.

Even the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines, through Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, deplored the killings of Lumads and told the military to leave the persecuted indigenous communities in Mindanao.

We support the struggles of the Lumad people. We call for the military and para-military groups to leave the Lumad areas. We call for the large-scale mining operations, undertaken by big corporations and Filipino unscrupulous capitalists, to stop. We join our brothers in sisters in the indigenous areas in their fight for land, justice, and restoration of their ancentral lands and domains.
