No Vote for Duterte, No Vote for All Presidential Candidates

PLM-Kababaihan joins the women’s movement and others in condemning the recent statements made by presidential candidate Rody Duterte when he trivialized and even glorified the machismo culture of rape and violence against women. We also welcome the position that calls for a “no vote” for Duterte.

The culture of impunity, with regards to violence against women, is endemic to this system of trapopolitics. We only know too well how the male representatives of the elite abuse their personal power over poor and working class women, who can become entrapped in the sphere of influence of the scions of the elite families and political clans. Violence against women is a characteristic, even a foundation, that upholds the system of trapo politics and elite rule that dominates this country. As long as trapo politics and elite rule continue, a culture of rape and violence against women will be prevalent.

PLM-Kababaihan therefore calls on the women’s movement to cast a “no vote” not only against Duterte, but against all the presidential candidates, as they all represent this system of trapo politics and elite rule.

As for the comments made by the Australian embassy in the Philippines criticizing Duterte’s statement, we are acutely aware that the Australian government’s system of forcibly detaining refugees in prison-like conditions has fostered violence against women refugees and their children, including rape, in the detention centers. We deplore the hypocrisy of the Australian government which allows and even defends violence against women refugees in detention. #
